Successful Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery for Complex Congenital Heart Disease at B.R. Singh Hospital
Kolkata, August 19, 2025
In a significant achievement, the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery team at B.R. Singh Hospital (BRSH), Eastern Railway, successfully performed a Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) on a 17-year-old girl suffering from a rare congenital heart defect — Atrial Septal Defect (Sinus Venosus type) with Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (PAPVC).
The patient had been experiencing recurrent chest discomfort, palpitations, and breathlessness for almost a year. Despite several consultations elsewhere, her condition remained undiagnosed until she visited the Cardiology OPD at BRSH. Routine tests appeared normal, but based on clinical suspicion, a Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) was advised, which confirmed the diagnosis of ASD with PAPVC — a condition where oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mix abnormally inside the heart.
Considering her age and gender, the surgical team led by Dr. Rashid, CTVS Surgeon, opted for a minimally invasive approach instead of conventional open-heart surgery. The procedure was carried out through a small 3–4 inch incision below the right chest, ensuring minimal scarring, quicker recovery, and better cosmetic results.
The surgery was a complete success, and the patient was discharged in stable condition. Her family expressed gratitude to the medical team for their expertise and dedication.
This milestone reaffirms BRSH’s commitment to advanced, patient-centric cardiac care by combining clinical excellence with modern surgical techniques.
