The IT Centre at Kanchrapara was established in the year 1988 under Railway Board Project “”Computerization of 16 Railway workshops of the Indian Railways Phase-I” with the objective of computerization of different manual systems of Workshops. One Server (HCL-INFINITY), 10 dumb terminals, 1 Line Printer, 10 Dot Matrix Printers and 5 PC-XTs were installed. COBOL was the programming language and applications developed were Payroll System, Incentive Billing System, Machine & Plant Maintenance System, Production Planning & Control System, Inventory Management System, Financial Management Information System and Rolling Stock Maintenance System. System was running with the help of drafted staff from Shop Floors, trained by HCL for Data Entry Operations and Applications Maintenance. In due course 18 post of Data Entry Operators were created and filled by those trained staff.
In year 1999, IT Systems were upgraded centrally by Railway Board. New System was installed with HP-9000 Server,10 New Dumb terminals, 2 Line Matrix Printers and 10 Dot Matrix Printers. Applications running under old system were converted for new platform by HCL. HCL COBOL was replaced by Micro Focus COBOL.
In year 2005, new IT Cadre created by Railway Board where IT Centre was Converted to IT Centre and Data Entry Operators were re-designated as JE-IT.
IPAS, an Integrated Payroll Accounts System has been implemented successfully in June 2015. This web application running from CRIS Server at NDLS is covering most of the activities of Accounts and Personnel Departments.
HP-9000 server system was running till Nov, 2015. New Server System (2 No Intel Xeon Hex core Server with dual processors) has already received at IT Centre/KPA. Work of integration of these servers with the local area network and installation of operating system with other system software is under process.
To cover the production activities at Shop Floors, Railway Board is implementing another ERP Based System through CRIS named as Workshops Information System (WISE-II). WISE-II System was scheduled to be implemented by 2014 at KPA Works under rollout phase after completion of pilot phase. However, the implementation is not yet started at KPA workshop.
