Asansol Division is one of the most important division not only in Eastern Railway but also in Indian Railway.  This division was established in 1925. This is one of the oldest divisions on the Indian Railways and has always been in the forefront of operations, both freight and passenger.

As far as Eastern Railway is concerned, Asansol Division is referred to as the heart of operations, being at the crossroads of the Grand Chord route via Gaya and the main line route via Patna.

The Civil Engineering Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of all civil engineering assets, viz. all buildings including Railway station buildings, residential quarters, hospitals, sheds, workshop structures, goods sheds etc., water supply and sanitary installations, Railway tracks, sidings and all allied structures, bridges including Road over Bridges and Road under Bridges.

Khana Jn to Pradhankhunta on the Grand Chord line:-Km.120.700to Km.260.200. (from Howrah)

Sitarampur to Jhajha section Main line:- Km.221.05 to Km.364.51.

Branch line:-Andal – Sainthia:- Km.00.00 – 70.74, Madhupur – Giridih Km.00.00-37.91, Jasidih- Baidyanathdham:- 00.00-06.25, Jasidih-Dumka Km.00.00-72.70, Deoghar – Banka Km.00.00-54.00, Andal-Topsi-Baraboni-Sitarampur Km.00.00 – 42.00 and Bhimgara-Hazratpur Km.00.00 – 08.00.

These area quadruple electrified section between Khana to Sitarampur UPI & DNI and UPII & DNII,Sitarampur to Chotoambona double line section UP GC & DN GC and the section between Sitarampur - Jhajha double line section UP Main line and DN Main line.

It serves states of West Bengal, Bihar & Jharkhand covering ten districts viz. Purba Barddhaman, Paschim Barddhaman and Birbhum in West Bengal, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Deoghar, Giridih and Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand & Jamui and Banka in Bihar

 

Traffic on the division is predominantly freight with coal as the principal commodity loaded from Raniganj, Mugma, Jamtara and Giridih regions. Other goods include cement loaded at DCW Durgapur, UTCL Durgapur, Lafarge Raniganj & Emami Panagarh. Steelmaterials from Durgapur and IISCO and parcel traffic originating from Asansol, Durgapur, Raniganj, Madhupur and Jasidih.

 

Asansol Division serves major power houses like Mejia (DVC), Bakreshwar (WBPDCL), DTPS(DVC) and DSTPS at Waria. Large number of sponge Iron plants and mini steel plants are also located on the division.
