Carriage and Wagon wing of Mechanical Engineering Department is associated with the maintenance of Coaches and Wagons. Asansol Division is major freight loading division. Thus it demands more on wagon maintenance, examination and repair front for adequate availability of fit wagons for freight loading. An overview of this wing is given below-

Besides Coach maintenance at Pit line, Platform Attention is also being done for en route train passing and watering for nominated trains.

(C.) Clean Train Station (CTS):
"Clean Train Station Scheme" is one of the major initiatives of Indian Railways. Asansol Station is nominated as Clean Train Station in Eastern Railway. Total 26 long distance trains are cleaned by professional agency by mechanized process, especially toilets are cleaned by using high pressure jet machines and environment friendly bio-degradable cleaning agents at Asansol during their scheduled stoppage.
4. (A.) MAJOR WAGON ACTIVITIES:
In Asansol Division, wagon activities are concentrated at Andal/DSEY/Sitarampur and Hirapur.
Total Wagon Repair (Yard and Sicklines) - Avg. 5500 wagons per month (2019-20)
Total Routine Overhaul of Air Brake Wagons- 500 wagons per month (2019-20)
Total Rake examination - 555 rakes (CC-40, Premium-90, ETE-425)per month (2019-20)
(B.) Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD):
Wheel Impact Load Detector System is fitted at Nimcha in Asansol Division/Eastern Railway. This is an unmanned trackside system that measures the impact load on the rails to detect defects in Coaches, Wagons and Locomotives. As the Train passes over the instrumented rail, data is collected and sent to the system in real time. If defective axles found, an audio visual alarm is activated and concerned officials are alerted immediately. Corrective action is taken to avoid any unusual incident.
5. HIGHLIGHTS:
(A.) ISO Certification of Depot, Yards & Sick Lines and 5-S, Lean Six Sigma Certification of BOXN ROH Depot in Asansol Division:
Asansol Coaching Depot (Old and New), BOXN ROH Depot/Andal, Freight Examination Yards (i.e. UP Yard, West Down Departure Yard, Empty Yard, DSEY & Chinpai Yard)/Andal and Sick lines (Up Sick line, Down Sick Line & DSEY Sick Line)/Andal are covered under IMS Certification ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 18001:2007). These IMS Certification addresses to Quality, Environment (EMS) and Occupational Health & Safety (OHSAS).
BOXN ROH Depot, Andal in consultation with M/s Quality Circle Forum of India, Kolkata Chapter has implemented Modern Quality Concept i.e. 5S (Workplace Management System). BOXN ROH Depot, Andal is first ROH Depot in Eastern Railways to obtain the ‘5S’ Certification.
Further, BOXN ROH DEPOT/Andal has also been certified with the LEAN SIX SIGMA Certification on 15 December 2019. Lean Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology designed to eliminate problems, remove waste and inefficiency, and improve working conditions to provide a better response to customers' needs.
(B.) Bio-toilet fitment in all coaches of Asansol Division:
Bio-toilet has been fitted in all Passenger coaches in Asansol Division. Conversion to Bio-toilets has resulted in nil discharge of night soil wastes, only processed effluent (solid waste and odour free) is discharged on Railway tracks. In order to tackle the known problem of foul smell in Bio toilets of coaches, RDSO issued a design of Ventury type Exhaust system, which has been further improvised in Asansol Division. A Natural Force Air Ventilation system has been developed in house to tackle the foul smell in better manner.
(C.) Up-gradation of Trains under Project Utkrisht:
Five trains in Asansol Division (Jasidih-Tambaram Exp 13576/75, Asansol-Mumbai Express 12361/62, Asansol-Gonda/Gorakhpur Express 13507/08/09/10, Asansol-Haldia/Digha Express 13501/02/05/06 and Asansol-Tata Express 13511/12) have been upgraded under Project Utkrisht with all advance amenity fittings for better satisfaction of passengers in Asansol Division. For improved travelling experience & maximum comfort, the rakes were thoroughly renovated with features like good quality Painting & Laminated Vinyl Wrapping. Disposable Pillow Cover, Health Faucet, Steel Dustbin, Heritage Theme based scenery, Night Glowing Seat Numbers, Timetable near door have been provided in the coaches.
(D.)Up-gradation of Up Yard & West Down Departure Yard at Andal as Smart Yard:
Up Yard and West Down Departure Yard at Andal are under up-gradation as Smart Yard.E-Rickshaw, Electric Scooter and Bi-Cycles have been procured for faster Man and Material movement in Yard, particularly on narrow pathways. Widening of pathways to 05 mtrs, at least on one side of the examination line with adequate illumination for faster movement of work stations and material movement vans. Full length under Ground Welding lines with proper welding voltage covering all examination lines is being provided. This will result in reduction of examination time and increase in efficiency of Yard to great extant.
(E.) On-site repair of Unloadable wagons by Flying Gang:
Repair of Unloadable wagons at siding itself has been started in November 2019 by C&W Department/ Asansol Division. Total 1437 BOXN wagons (Average 287.4 wagons per month) have been repaired at sidings in 2019-20.
(F.)Activities undertaken to fight against COVID-19:
Asansol Division has converted 25 ICF coaches (23-GS & 2-WGSCN) to Isolation coach with all prescribed facilities to cater for COVID-19 infected patients. Middle berths have been removed for making the cabins spacious in WGSCN coaches. One cabin has been converted to paramedic area, one toilet has been converted to bathroom. Transparent curtains are installed in aisle area, Good quality mosquito net is provided on windows to avoid entry of mosquito inside and have proper ventilation too.
Asansol Division has started manufacturing the Body Coverall for paramedics at local level. Satisfying all the standards & instruction from the Railway Board, Mechanical C&W Deptt. Asansol Division started manufacturing of PPEs on 16.04.2020. The main raw material i.e. impermeable polypropylene & adhesive tape has been collected form workshops. The sample has already been accepted by a board of Division Railway Doctors for further use. These PPEs are not only trust worthy but cost effective too. Under the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager, Asansol the manufacturing work of PPEs is streamlined and undergoing smoothly. Total 282 Body coverall PPE have been made in till 05.05.2020.
Mechanical C&W Deptt. has also manufactured 10 beds and 02 stretchers by released berths from Isolation coaches. Middle berths removed from isolation coaches have been modified as stretchers (L 72”xW22”x H35”) by providing caster wheel on a metallic fabricated structure. This can be manoeuvred on smooth surface by a single person during transportation of patients, similar to other stretchers in hospitals. In addition, 25 IV Saline Stand and 21 Trolleys for Medical Oxygen have also been made for use in Hospital and Isolation Coaches.
