The Rail Museum, a treasure of India’s Rail Heritage, first state of the art in its kind, at Howrah, set up on the bank of river Hooghly, was inaugurated on April 7th, 2006. Its foundation stone was laid on Sept 1, 2005. The museum highlights the history and heritage of railway in the eastern part of the country. It displays the history of Eastern Railway, Howrah station and Railways in Eastern India. Also put up are pictorial history of East Indian Railway, Eastern Railway, East Central Railway, East Coast Railway, South Eastern Railway, North Frontier Railway, Chittaranjan Locomotive Workshops and Metro Railway, Kolkata. Century old drawings, firms, documents and fascinating collection of philately, 150 years old steam locos, carriages, salon cars, trains etc. are major crowd pullers. With a 2-boggie toy train chugging around, children with their parents can enjoy a ride for a nominal fare. For gastronomic journey down memory lane old coaches have been converted into restaurant and dining car. A part of the 4.5 acre of land has been beautified as a park with flower plants and well decorated fountains. The museum lives a motto – ‘LEARN WHILE YOU HAVE FUN”.
