Historical background of Jamalpur workshop :

The Locomotive Engineering Workshop  (as it was originally known) at Jamalpur was established on 8th day of February 1862, being re-located from Howrah to cater to the requirement in respect of undertaking economic  repairs as well as commissioning of the imported Rolling Stocks for the then East Indian Railway(EIR). This shifting perhaps had to be done prematurely only after 8 years of inspection, since the EIR's growth rate as envisioned, was hugely out-paced by the actual one. Most probably, the site selection for this re-location was heavily influenced by the availability of adequate plain land and skilled human resources in and around this place, who were known to be the descendants of acclaimed Gun-makers and fabricators of steel weapons meant for the Nawabs of undivided Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. 

                The topography of Jamalpur was so good that it became a natural choice for the workshop. A beautiful hill range on the eastern side has not only provided natural safety to the place but has also brought in healthy climatic conditions. Availability of river Ganges within a vicinity of only seven kilometers has been a boom to this place as far as source of potable water is concerned.

·E                      Jamalpur Workshop has enjoyed the distinction of being the largest and oldest repair workshop with the most diversified actives on Indian Railways.

The workshop has a number of FIRSTS to its credit, a few of which are:-

·The FIRST to manufacture a steam locomotive  (The first one, CA 764 'Lady Curzon', was produced in 1899.) at a cost of Rs. 33,000/- which served for 33 years. The manufacture of Steam locomotive was stopped in the year 1923 after manufacturing 216 locomotives and   locomotive boilers – between 1899 and 1923.

·The FIRST to have set up a rolling mill not only on the railways, but probably  in the country in 1870.(now closed)

·The FIRST to establish a railway foundry in the year 1893.

·The FIRST to manufacture a rail travelling crane in the country with indigenous know-how in 1961.

·The FIRST to manufacture high capacity synchronized electrically operated lifting jacks popularly known as "JAMALPUR JACKS" in 1962 and ticket printing, ticket chopping, ticket slitting and ticket counting machines.

·The FIRST and the only railway workshop to manufacture electrical arc furnaces of ½ tonne capacity in 1961 for production of steel casting.

·This is the only workshop in Indian Railways that was having an in-house captive power plant of 5 MVA.

·This is the only workshop in Indian Railways that has manufactured 140 T ART cranes.

·First prototype stainless steel BOXN HL wagon was fabricated and inaugurated by Ex. MM Sri R K Rao on 14th Feb’2008.

                Colonies were developed, one at “East Colony” and the other at “Rampur Colony.” The quarters are well designed, spacious and having good ventilation and sanitation. It gradually changed from bungalow pattern to multi-storied pattern so that more people can be accommodated and maintenance is also easier. By the devastating earthquake on 15th January 1934 a massive destruction almost flattened the colonies which in the subsequent times have been re-generated by the name East colony, Rampur colony and Daulatpur Colony.


                Considering national and global standards, the workshop obtained its ISO 9001:2000 certification on 28th May 2003 which got subsequently upgraded to ISO 9001-2008 during 2010-11.Thus, now this workshop has become at par with any other heavy engineering industry in the country dealing with Rolling stock manufacture and POH.


  To have a good environment and to have control over pollution, the workshop has taken some important steps.

·Installation of ETP plant – The discharge coming out from the workshop containing pollutants is being treated through this plant and thus only safe discharge is being allowed to flow out confirming to the standard as laid down by Govt. of Bihar. The plant is under operational since 01.09.2006 with a capacity of 1.5 Million liters per day (MLD).

·Processing for ISO-14001 certification is in progress.


                Being a unique place and surrounded by hills, jungles and river the place itself has its own greenery. As a booster to the same, tree plantation schemes have been implemented, which includes vegetation in several block spaces within the Railway area.

The Railway Ecological Golf Course situated in the East Colony is being maintained with all its amenities giving utmost importance to preserve greenery. This is one of the best of its kind in the country. 


                Jamalpur Workshop is supported by a 252 bedded Main hospital which is the second largest hospital in the district of Munger. It is headed by a CMS. This institution has multi disciplinary features like Medicine, Surgery, Maternity and Gynae, Eye, Chest, Pathology, Paediatrics, Health and Family welfare services. To enhance modern facilities, ICU units have also been incorporated. It is also supported by one Workshop Health Unit inside the workshop. Further, for community service for the residents of Railway colonies, three other Health Units are also being run. The total medical set up is being managed by a group of 18 doctors.


                The Railway set up at Jamalpur is having 04 schools. Out of these, 03 are following CBSE curriculum. One school (Shishu Vidyalaya) is being run by ERWWO/JMP unit for the kinder garden education.


                The water supply for the Railway system of Jamalpur is unique. The complete pump sets including its transformers, are mounted on to a floating barge on the river Ganges.


Publication of Act Apprenticeship Enrolment Result for the Verification of Documents

 On 30th November’16 result for the enrolment of Act apprentices was published (Enrolment Notice No.E/WSR/Act apprentice/JMP/2014-15 dated Jamalpur, November 2016) for documents verification.
Grievance Camp

 Grievance Camps were organised on 03.11.16, 17.11.16 and 25.11.16 where a total of 63 grievances registered. 46 Nos. (73%) were resolved on the spot and rest 17 Nos. are under process.

Payment of ₹ 10,000 as Advance Salary on 19th November’16

 As per directive, payment of ₹ 10,000 as an advance salary (Part) of November’16 was paid to the employees on 19.11.16 and 21.11.16. This workshop thus stand First by disbursing this payment promptly considering staff welfare in Eastern Railway.


              Jamalpur Workshop organized a meeting regarding quality issues pertaining to Off-POH Diesel Loco on 21.03.2014, where officers and supervisors from Eastern Railway and East central Railway participated.

Differential amount  to the tune of Rs.19.09 crores realized against final costing after dispatch of the last BLC rake(675 Lot) from CONCOR (Cheque No. 004564, dt:09.04.14.).

One month training (01.04.14 to 30.04.14) for 140T Crane Drivers was organized in which 22 trainees from 8 Zones /16 Divisions participated.

                                                        Communal Harmony Campaign Week
 Communal Harmony Campaign Week (National Integration Week) was celebrated from 19.11.16 to 25.11.16. An oath was taken on 19.11.16 on this eve.
                                                           Second Constitution Day
  Second “Constitution Day” was celebrated on 26.11.16. An oath was taken on this eve by a large mass of Railway employees.
