Principal Pilot Training School/Jamalpur

Sri D. K. Shakya (PPTS)



 To impart technical know-how to the diesel loco pilots on various locomotives and grooming them to meet the challenges in operation of train in the changing scenario in Indian Railways.

History of the School:-   Though drivers/Pilots of steam era were being given some training at JMP since the establishment of Jamalpur workshop in the seventh decade of nineteenth century, but after establishment of Technical School/Jamalpur (nowadays called IRIMEE) in 1888-1905 the training was put under its control.  Later, when the Technical School was transformed to IRIMEE in 1974, PTS (Pranali takniki School) was formed and attached to Eastern Railway. Workshop /Jamalpur. Later on the Institute was named Diesel Driver Training Centre(DDTC), presently DDTC is known as Pilot Training School i,e PTS.      

Present Status of Pilot Training School


i)    The school (PTS) is running in a part of the IRIMEE building since 2003. Simulator Centre, the other wing of the PTS is running in a newly set up building since Nov’05.

ii)   The school is conducting two Promotional Courses e.g. ALP/Shunter to loco pilot (goods) & loco pilot (goods) to loco pilot (passenger) and Initial Course for trainee asstt. loco pilot (diesel). Refresher course of loco pilots from non-railway organization like Kolkata Port  Trust is also conducted on request.

iii)     Simulator training is must for all category trainees’ in order to develop self-reliance on independent locomotive handling.

iv)    One hour yoga training by yoga guruji from Bihar School of Yoga to each batch of trainees for a duration of fifteen days is imparted in the beginning hours of the school.

v)    The trainees are boarded in Rampur Hostel having equal capacity accommodation to school, is situated at distance of 2 ½ Km away from PTS.

Development Proposal  

i)       PWP for setting up a new school building with attached hostel having a    capacity of 120 students was forwarded and a sum of 4 crores has been allocated in P.B. 2008-09.GAD & estimation process is going on.

ii)      A well-equipped school is likely to come up in near future. 


Pilot Training School,  Jamespur,  providing total three nos. of courses to meet with the Divisional requirements for promotional purposes of the Loco Pilots & Induction courses for newly appointed Asst. Loco Pilots. The course particulars are appended.

1)     Promotional Course ALP to LP(G)

      6 days training course is conducted for the promotional candidates those who attended Pilot Training School  for promotional course.

2)     Promotional Course LP(G) to LP(P)

        12 days training course is conducted for the promotional candidates those who attended Pilot Training School  for promotional course

3)     3 Days Special Simulator Course 

   This course is conducted round the year. The course slots  are circulated in the month of April every year to the divisions.

4)     3 Days Refresher Simulator Course.

    This new course has been incorporated withexisting courses vide HQ letter no M/RL/P/42/Rg.Staff/Trg./pt.IX dated 22.02.2008 to provide a short course to the candidates booked by divisional headquarters before the undergo refresher course at either BWN or at HWH.
