Wagon Repair

Wagon POH Organization

Headed by Dy. Chief Mechanical Engineer (Wagon)


 Steam locomotive came to an end in August 1992 when the last WP locomotive “Sandhya” was POHed. Wagon repair was undertaken in   its  place in the Erecting Shop simultaneously. Wagon POH started with a modest figure of less than 100 VUs/month. It crossed landmark of   300  per month in 2004-05 on a sustained basis and in 2011-12 even went up to 450 VUs in a month placing it amongst the top five Wagon   Repair Workshop of Indian Railways.

 Jamalpur is also fairly well located to undertake this workload as it is close to the coal loading belt where the bulk of BOX/BOX(N) Wagons   are examined and isoloated for repairs.


1.POH of all types of Air Brake wagons viz BOXN, BOBRN BRN, BCN etc.

The Present activities of wagon organization are:

 Presently, JMPW has been entrusted to carry out POH of 450 VU per month, which makes it one of the biggest workshop in terms of wagon   POH in entire Indian Railway. In addition to this JMPW also carried out the rehabilitation of BOXN to BOXNR wagons, rebuilding of BOXN   and BOBRN wagons. Also, in sync with Indian Railways target of converting entire rolling stock in twin pipe brake system. JMPW is   retrofitting twin pipe in wagons

 The growing economy of India requires Indian Railways to be ready for its part in freight movement. Hence, the wagon population of IR is   increasing continuously, the maintenance and POH of wagon will be crucial for seamless operation and Jamalpur workshop is ready to play   its part efficiently.  


 Since July’1998 to Sep.’2018, total 80112 wagons have been overhauled/repaired

           Up-gradation & rehabilitation BOXN wagon using IRSM-44 material. Total 1084 Nos. completed till Sep.’2018. 

         Modified sliding door in BCNHL wagon in place of swing type is being fitted.

         Retro-fitment of BMBS 335 wagons done till Sep.’2018.

         Highest ever wagon POH outturn of 451 VUs in July’2018

         2608 wagons turned out till Sep.’2018 against the target of 2700 in 2018-19

         Average cycle time in the year 2017-18 is 8.2 days

         Retro-fitment of twin pipe air brake system of 1341 wagon up to Sep.’2018 has been completed and from April’2018 to Sep.’2018 our avg.     rate of conversion from single pipe to twin pipe air brake system in wagons has been 56.1%

          Rebuilding of 232 BOXN wagon has been completed up to Sep.’18
