Kolkata, January 28, 2021:

The curtains in AC coaches of Rajdhani/Shatabdi and other Mail/Express trains were removed to prevent spread of Corona virus since outbreak of COVID-19. Though the removal of curtains were inevitable, but the purpose of putting curtains on to the windows of AC coaches remain unchanged.

The passengers were facing inconvenience of constant light from outside and external heat during summer season affecting the efficacy of internal cooling too. This problem existed on pan India basis.

For the first time in Indian Railways, Eastern Railway shown the ray of hope and as a solution to curtain problem, introduced Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) based smart switchable window in First AC coach of 02301 Howrah – New Delhi AC Special, erstwhile known as Rajdhani Express. This technology enables the passengers to press the switch to make the transparent window glass to non-transparent and vice versa.

The newly installed window glass based on this technology will help the passengers to enjoy privacy whenever they want and will also cut the ultra violet radiation through the window glass.
