TRANSFORMING RAIL TRAVEL: 55% OF EASTERN RAILWAY COACHES NOW UPGRADED TO LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch)

Kolkata, June 27, 2024:

Eastern Railway is at the forefront of transforming passenger travel by steadily replacing traditional ICF coaches with state-of-the-art LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches. These advanced technology coaches are designed to enhance passenger comfort and safety, significantly reducing the risk of injuries in the event of accidents.
Currently, 2,356 out of the total 4,435 coaches in Eastern Railway are LHB coaches, with the remaining 2,079 being ICF coaches. Among the divisions, Howrah boasts 1,093 LHB coaches, Sealdah has 788, Malda 383, and Asansol 92, each contributing to the improved travel experience for passengers.
LHB coaches are approximately 2 meters longer than their ICF counterparts, providing more seats or berths, wider passageways, and broader doors for easier passenger movement. Additionally, LHB coaches are about 10% lighter, reducing fuel consumption and minimizing wear and tear on both the coaches and the railway tracks. The advanced design of LHB coaches enables them to travel at speeds of up to 180 km/h, offering a faster and more efficient travel experience. High-quality materials and components used in LHB coaches enhance durability and make maintenance easier and more cost-effective, ensuring long-term reliability.
Safety is a paramount feature of LHB coaches. Fire-resistant fittings, advanced smoke and fire alarms, and special couplers with anti-climbing features are integrated into the design to maximize passenger protection. The shatterproof fiberglass-reinforced plastic windows, filled with argon gas, minimize heat transfer and provide a panoramic view, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Modern amenities in LHB coaches include advanced bathrooms with air diffusers and heat sensors, and ergonomically designed seats and berths tailored to the physical build of Indian passengers, ensuring greater comfort during travel.
With 55% of its coaches now upgraded to LHB, Eastern Railway is committed to achieving 100% conversion in the near future, setting new standards in passenger rail travel. This significant transition promises a more comfortable, safe, and efficient journey for all passengers
