HOWRAH DIVISION ACHIEVES GOOD MILESTONES IN SAFETY ENHANCEMENT DURNING  2023-24

Kolkata, March 31,2024

Eastern Railway's Howrah Division takes significant strides towards enhancing safety measures in railway operations during the fiscal year 2023-24. With a relentless commitment to ensuring passenger and crew safety, several key initiatives have been successfully implemented, addressing critical aspects of signal visibility, interlocking systems, gate operations, crew facilities, and predictive maintenance. These endeavors underscore our dedication to bolstering operational efficiency and minimizing risks across the division's expansive network.

Improved Signal Visibility:

Installation and commissioning of four signal units on TTC mast/Portal between September and December 2023 have substantially enhanced signal visibility, a crucial step in preventing Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents.
Innovative lightweight Aluminium signal units procured from Byculla Workshop, Mumbai, mark a pioneering advancement on Indian Railways, promoting clearer signal observation.

Enhanced Interlocking Systems:

In a proactive approach towards safety, the division undertook the replacement of age-old Mechanical lever frames with Electronic Interlocking at Sorting Yard Goods Cabin, Liluah Goods Cabin, and HWH Goods cabin, augmenting operational efficiency and reliability.
Six manned Level Crossing Gates have been interlocked, further fortifying safety measures at critical crossings.
Gate Operations and Crew Facilities:

Implementation of 62 Stand-By Sliding Barrier Boom Type Gates and 26 Electric Lifting Barriers has not only bolstered safety protocols but also streamlined gate operations, reducing delays and enhancing punctuality.
Introduction of new Crew Lobbies & Running Rooms at Bolpur and Dankuni significantly alleviates crew fatigue and ensures optimal rest periods, ultimately fostering a safer working environment.

Innovative Technological Solutions:

The development of an E-Learning App empowers crew members with comprehensive training modules, interactive quizzes, and informative videos, bolstering operational proficiency and situational awareness.
Utilization of AI-based Wheel Prediction software enables predictive maintenance, optimizing locomotive wheel life and scheduling replacements efficiently, thus minimizing operational disruptions.

Structural Enhancements:

Successful re-girdering of Bridge No. 240 and Bridge No. 125, augmenting their load-bearing capacities to accommodate modern freight demands, reflects the division's commitment to infrastructure modernization and safety enhancement.

Shri Kausik Mitra Chief Public Relations Officer Eastern Railway stated "
Eastern Railway always remains steadfast in its commitment to safety and operational excellence. These initiatives of Howrah Division further underscore proactive approach to address emerging challenges and reinforce Eastern Railway's pledge to prioritize passenger and crew well-being."
