SAVING IN DIESEL AND ELECTRIC TRACTION OVER EASTERN RAILWAY TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Kolkata, November 20, 2023 :
As a part of endeavour towards saving of energy and reducing carbon footprint, Eastern Railway uses 3 – Phase Electric Locomotive which has a regenerative capacity. At present Eastern Railway has a population of 267 nos of 3 – Phase Electric Locomotives. The saving from 71 nos of using such 3 – Phase Electric Locomotives which visited in sheds for hauling trains in the month of October, 2023 is about 39,26,544 units of energy i.e. having a monetary value of saving of approximately Rs. 2.68 crores. The cumulative saving from use of 3 – Phase Electric Locomotives in Eastern Railway in FY2023-24 is 2,06,36,678 units upto October, 2023 worth Rs. 13.95 Crores (approx.).
High Speed Diesel (HSD) oil consumption in Eastern Railway has also been reduced to 18910.410 KL (Kilo Litre) during April to October, 2023 in respect of 24880.875 KL of HSD consumption in the corresponding period of previous year i.e. April to October, 2022. Thus, this year Eastern Railway has achieved a saving of HSD oil to the extent of 5970.465 KL.
During the month of October, 2023, force shutting down of 1262 Diesel locos when not in use has been ensured. This also has resulted saving of 448.048 KL of HSD oil worth Rs. 4.27 crores.
All these measures taken by Eastern Railway not only help in reducing the HSD oil consumption but also at the same time improves environmental sustainability by reducing carbon footprint due to burning of fossil fuel.
