EASTERN RAILWAY TAKES PROACTIVE MEASURES TO ENHANCE SAFETY: INTRODUCTION OF EMERGENCY BRAKE TRAINING FOR CREW MEMBERS
Kolkata, November 18, 2023
In a concerted effort to prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) and mitigate the risk of accidents, Eastern Railway implemented a comprehensive training program for its crew members on the application of emergency brakes through the RS valve. The training emphasized the critical role of Assistant Loco Pilots (ALPs) and Loco Pilots (LPs) in promptly identifying situations where the train speed poses a potential danger of not stopping before a red signal. In such instances, immediate application of the emergency brake through the RS valve was crucial to avert any mishap.
INSTALLATION OF PRACTICAL TRAINING ARRANGEMENT
To familiarize the crew with the RS valve application, a practical training arrangement was set up in the Howrah (HWH) crew lobby. This initiative, developed by the Electric Loco Shed (ELS) at Howrah, enabled crew members to physically operate the RS valve during their Sign-ON duty.
OATH FOR NO SPAD
During the training, crew members actively engaged with the RS valve, reinforcing their ability to apply the emergency brake without hesitation in emergency situations. As part of the program, each crew member took an oath committing to preventing SPAD incidents and ensuring passenger safety.
ADVANTAGES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM
This innovative training arrangement was designed to instill confidence in the crew for the effective application of the RS valve during emergencies. By empowering ALPs and LPs with the skills to make split-second decisions, Eastern Railway aimed to enhance safety standards and further reduce the risk of accidents.
Shri Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations officer, Eastern Railway, said " Eastern Railway will always remain committed to prioritizing safety and implement proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of passengers and Railway personnel".
