EASTERN RAILWAYS SETS THE STANDARD FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY ACROSS FOUR DIVISIONS
Kolkata, November 17, 2023

In a resounding display of commitment to passenger safety, Eastern Railways has taken formidable strides in ensuring a secure travel environment across its four key divisions – Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol, and Malda. Eastern Railway’s Security personnel as well as station staff are all activated to curb carrying of inflammable articles in train compartments. Officers at apex level are also monitoring the fire safety measures over Eastern Railway round the clock.

1. Vigilant Checks Yield Impressive Results:
Trains: Total 109 checks conducted, reinforcing safety o­nboard.
Stations: Total 90 checks conducted, emphasizing station security.
Yards and Lines: Total 25 checks conducted, bolstering safety in critical areas.

2. Stringent Action against Offenses:
In addition to this, a resolute effort to maintain a smoke-free environment in Railway premises and trains has led to the arrest of 412 individuals under section 167 of the Railway Act and 101 individuals under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTP) for smoking offenses. 

3. Innovative Security Measures:
Video Displays: Implemented in 01 station to enhance awareness.
PA system Announcements: 59 stations utilized for timely communication.
Awareness Meetings: 640 sessions conducted, reaching out to porters, lease holder staff, Pantry Car staff, OBHS staff, and passengers.

4. Festive Season Security Drive:
In a decisive move aimed at enhancing safety during the festive season, Eastern Railways launched a comprehensive drive against carrying inflammable materials, including crackers and gas cylinders, o­n 18.10.2023. Providing an update o­n the o­ngoing drive until 16.11.2023, a total of 52 individuals have been apprehended and prosecuted under section 164 of the Railways Act, with two of them arrested for carrying crackers.

5. Continuing the Commitment:
The security drive against carrying firecrackers and inflammable items persists.
