Press Release:THE RENAMING OF BUDGE BUDGE STATION AS KOMAGATA MARU: A TRIBUTE TO HISTORY

Kolkata, September 15, 2023:

In a symbolic gesture that pays homage to a pivotal moment in India's struggle for independence and a significant chapter in immigration history, in 2013 the Budge Budge station was renamed as Komagata Maru Budge Budge station. Komagata Maru Budge Budge railway station is a Kolkata Suburban Railway Station on the Sealdah’s South section in Eastern Railways Sealdah Division. It serves the local area of Budge Budge in South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal
This renaming decision stands as a poignant tribute to the passengers of the Komagata Maru, whose journey to Canada in 1914 had a profound impact on the course of history.
In the early 20th century, the Komagata Maru incident was a flashpoint in the struggle against colonial rule and discriminatory immigration policies. The Komagata Maru was a Japanese steamship that arrived in Vancouver, Canada, carrying 376 passengers, mostly Punjabi Sikhs, in May 1914. These passengers hoped to start a new life in Canada, but they were met with systemic racism and discriminatory laws.

Canada's continuous journey regulation, which required passengers to arrive by a direct journey, was deliberately used to prevent Indian immigrants from landing. After being denied entry for over two months, the ship was forced to return to India, where it was met with a tragic atrocities from British authorities.

The renaming of Budge Budge Station as Komagata Maru Station is a significant step towards acknowledging this historical injustice and honoring the bravery and resilience of those who endured the hardships of the Komagata Maru incident.

This renaming not only serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by early Indian immigrants but also highlights the importance of justice, equality, and inclusivity. It underscores the need to remember and learn from the past, ensuring that such injustices are never repeated.

The renaming of the station carries a deep resonance in India's quest for justice and equality. It reinforces the idea that history should not be forgotten and that it can be a powerful tool for education and reflection. The legacy of the Komagata Maru incident continues to inspire discussions about immigration policies, human rights, and the importance of inclusivity in modern societies.

In conclusion, the renaming of Budge Budge Station as Komagata Maru Station is a commendable step in acknowledging a historically significant event and the sacrifices made by the passengers of the Komagata Maru. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who fought against discrimination and injustice, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the principles of justice, equality, and inclusivity in society.

Today Komagata Maru Budge Budge station offers a wide range of facilities for the convenience of passengers, including ticket counters, waiting rooms, food stalls, and restrooms.

The station is well-connected to the rest of the city. There are also parking facilities available for those who prefer to drive to the station.
