WORLD SCHIZOPHRENIA DAY WAS OBSERVED AT B R SINGH HOSPITAL

World Schizophrenia Day was observed at B. R. Singh Hospital/Eastern Railway/ Sealdah on 24.05.2023. Dr. Rudrendu Bhattacharya, Principal Chief Medical Director/ Eastern Railway and other doctors graced the occasion.
Schizophrenia is a disease of brain affecting 1% of the world population and as a result 40% of the affected patients attempted suicide. Life expectancy gets reduced by 20 years due to comorbid physical illness (Diabetes and heart disease). It is one of the top 10 causes of disability. Symptoms of schizophrenia may include suspiciousness, aimless wandering, agitation & withdrawal from family and friends. Schizophrenia is treatable with medications.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Rudrendu Bhattacharya, Principal Chief Medical Director/Eastern Railway emphasized on early warning signs of schizophrenia and the need for seeking prompt medical help.
Dr. Jhunu Mukherjee, Additional Chief Health Director (ACHD)/Psychiatry discussed on symptoms, treatment and common myths about schizophrenia. She also highlighted on TeleMANAS 14416 - 24 ×7 mental health helpline number- the initiative of Honorable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi ji's for making mental health care more accessible and affordable for everyone in India.
Leaflets were distributed among audience on early warning signs of schizophrenia and the role of family members & caregivers. The program was appreciated by the audience with a cheer. The programme was organized by Dr. Kalpana Mandal, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent/Health & Family Welfare/B. R. Singh Hospital.
