World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign focusing o­n diabetes mellitus and is held o­n 14 November each year commemorating the birthday of Dr. Fredrick Banting, a co-discoverer of insulin. World Diabetes Day was launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the rapid rise of diabetes around the world. Diabetes is a chronic disease where the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin if any at all. “World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition." The theme of World Diabetes Day 2022 is “ACCESS TO DIABETES EDUCATION.” Across the globe, o­ne person in every 05 seconds dies of diabetes. 537million adults (20-79 years) are known to be suffering from Diabetes. The cases of diabetes are increasing every year by leaps & bounds. Education is the most important tool to detect diabetes early & take necessary preventive measures to control blood sugar and its subsequent complications.

To create mass awareness among the workforce of ER’s Howrah Division, World Diabetes Day is celebrated in a befitting manner today (14.11.2022). Blood investigations like Hb, RBS, HbA1C, Serum Creatinine were conducted at Orthopedic Hospital, Howrah under the inspiring leadership of Dr. Debasish Guha, Chief Medical Superintendent/Howrah. Railway Beneficiaries attending OPD of Divisional Railway Hospital, Howrah were informed about different aspects of Diabetes. Dr V. Pandey, ACMS/H&FW/Howrah informed the audience about the basic aspects of Diabetes, while Dr Chaitali Patra (Pediatrician) apprised about the different aspects of Diabetes in Children. Dr Debjani Mukherjee (ACMS/Eye/Howrah) spoke about Diabetic Retinopathy and informed the beneficiaries about the preventive measures and treatment of the disease. Dr S. Garai (Gynaecologist/Howrah) & Dr Neha Ladha (Gynaecologist/Howrah) shared their views o­n diabetes in Women and diabetes in pregnancy & stressed about the control of blood sugar to deliver safe baby to safe mother. The awareness programme was thoroughly informative and the captive audience was immensely benefitted from the absorbing session.

Howrah Station has been decorated with Blue Light to observe World Diabetes Day. Banners were also displayed at Howrah station to inform the passengers and Railway employees about the importance of observing world diabetes day.
