ER’S RPF TEAM AT HOWRAH RECOVERED STOLEN BELONGINGS OF A PASSENGER BY
ANALYSING CCTV FOOTAGE

Eastern Railway Security Wing has made all possible arrangement for safety and security of the passengers and their belongings. Modern gadgets like CCTV monitoring has been arranged at different important stations over ER for quick action and accuracy in detection and prevention of unwanted activities.
Eastern Railway’s RPF team at Howrah recovered stolen laptop bag of a passenger and apprehended the accused involved in the theft.
At about 20.00 hrs. the officials of Crime Prevention and Detection Squad of RPF received a message from CCTV control room at Howrah, regarding theft of a laptop bag from a EMU train, The passenger, Shri Arindam Maity boarded the local train at PF No. 2 of Howrah Railway Station and put his laptop bag on the bunker which was beside the gate of the compartment and engaged in his mobile. Within few minutes someone stolen his laptop bag containing external hard disk also in which all his work data and personal photos were kept. He immediately approached on duty platform RPF staff for help and staff brought him to CCTV control room.
After talking with the passenger, the RPF team flung into action and searched the CCTV camera footage, identified the accused person and collected the video footage which was further circulated among all the CPDS team members as well as on duty Howrah/GRP Officer and Staffs on their mobile phone. A joint team of RPF & GRP was formed to detect the case.
During intervening night of 05/06.04.2021, the RPF team keeping surveillance from CCTV control room Howrah and others team members kept close eye vigil in the concourse area. At 01.20 hrs, team reached at south concourse area of Howrah station and spotted one suspect sleeping on a bench with the same laptop bag as his pillow and with same dress as in CCTV footage. The suspect matched with CCTV footage and taken into custody. The accused person disclosed his name as Surja Panja. on further interrogation, he voluntarily confessed his guilt that he has stolen the laptop bag from the bunker of the same train. He also revealed that he has been involved in many passenger related crimes previously.
The laptop was finally handed over to the passenger with all ok, in presence of GRP / Howrah.
After thorough interrogation, it was learnt by GRP that the accused has previous criminal record of planning Dacoity in which he managed to escape while some other were apprehended. GRP tagged him in the earlier case and taken up the investigation.
