                                                         Function of Public Relations Cell

The objective of Public Relations Department of Eastern Railway is to project a clear, correct and positive image of railways to the public as an efficient and responsive government transport organization. The department endeavours to achieve this objective on sustained basis interacting with the media. The achievements of this railway in various spheres of its activities are projected by the department in such a manner that a positive image of this railway is built up.

This department maintains cordial relations with the representatives of all daily newspapers, news agencies, All India Radio, Doordarshan and various other TV News Channels and constantly feed them with relevant railway information. Besides, media people are also taken out to the field from time to time to give them the firsthand account of various developmental activities in this railway system. 


EDITORIAL PUBLICITY

In order to ensure balanced media opinion, very close interaction with the editorial desk of newspapers, news agencies and other media of Kolkata are being maintained to keep the media always apprised of the current position of various railway activities. Besides, relations are being maintained with the local media of Asansol, Bolpur, Deoghar, Malda, Bhagalpur, Munger etc. which falls within the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway.

Altogether 542 Operational & Informative and 76 Developmental & Achievements PRESS RELEASES were issued during 2014-15, covering all the important activities of this railway.


AUDIOVISUAL PUBLICITY

In order to disseminate various railway information to the rail-users, for creating more impact, Doordarshan and different private TV News Networks were extensively used. To capture the attention of this most powerful audio-visual media, special care was taken to build up effective relations with the newsrooms of the channels.

 As a result, audio-visual publicity of all the important events of this railway was well organized during the period. Besides, 41 interviews/discussions/special coverage were organized on important events of this railway and dished out by various T.V.News Channels during the period.


CPRO’S INTERECTION WITH MEDIA PEOPLE

On an average, at least five senior journalists of print & electronic media turned up to CPRO’s office for various information as well as on courtesy visit on every working day. Information are supplied to them according to their need with clear and objective railway point of view. Besides, the journalists sometimes sought help for confirmation of their reservation for journey on assignment or for personal tours and it is taken care of in order to keep up warm relations with media people.

CPRO’s OFFICE

Shri R.K.Gupta, General Manager, Eastern Railway inaugurated CD  containing digital presentation of the history and heritage of Eastern Railway at a function held at CPEO’s office. Media people were invited to cover the function.

17.5.2014
Dr. B.C. Roy Auditorium, Sealdah

Eastern Railway celebrated the 59th Railway Week at a function   held at Dr. B.C. Roy Auditorium, Sealdah. Shri R.K. Gupta, General Manager, Eastern Railway gave away awards to the Divisions, Workshops and to the individual staff and officers for their meritorious performance during last year.
Wide media coverage was organized.

E. Rly HQ & Sealdah

Shri Arunendra Kumar, Chairman, Railway Board visited E.Rly Headquarters and held a high level meeting with General Manager Shri R.K.Guota & PHODs. Later the CRB addressed the officers of ER.SER & Metro Rly at Dr.B.C.Roy Auditorium, Sealdah and subsequently addressed a crowded media conference on passenger amenities, safety & security.

Programme on
“SWACHH BHARAT MISSION”

Shri R. K. Gupta, General Manager, E. Rly. along with officers and staff  took the pledge for cleanliness in response to the clarion call of “ SWACHH BHARAT MISSION” by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India.
Subsequently, Shri Gupta along with officers & staff took part in “SHRM DAAN” programme for cleanliness at Howrah, Sealdah, Kolkata & Majherhat stations.
 
For awareness of the passengers and rail users extensive campaign have been done in all popular media. Besides, Banners and Posters with cleanliness messages have been displayed in all the prominent locations of railway stations and offices all over Eastern Railway. In addition to that a short film was also produced on cleanliness awareness and released for viewing on CCTVs at all major stations.
Wide media coverage was organized.

21.2.2015
Press Club/Kolkata

Shri R.K.Gupta, General Manager, E.Rly. inaugurated 2-day photo exhibition on railways at Kolkata Press Club. Wide media coverage was organized.

                                 

PERFORMANCE OF MEDIA SECTION DURING 2014-15

Invitation cards were printed on 1 occasion during important railway programme.

Leaflets were produced for public awareness on precautions during fog.

One publicity-cum-goodwill message on the New Year and one publicity-cum-vigilance message were also printed during the period. One Independence Day message of General Manager, Eastern Railway was also printed.

Video documentaries were prepared on 15 occasions including on History and Heritage of Eastern Railway, on Cleanliness Drive conducted during Swacch Bharat Mission and vigilance Awareness Week observation.

PRINTING OF BOOK

Vigilance Bulletin ‘JAGRITI’ was printed during observance of Vigilance Awareness Week during 27 October – 01 November, 2014.

PRINTING OF POSTERS

Multi-colour posters were printed on observation of Vigilance Awareness Week.

PRINTING OF BANNERS

Flex printed banners were produced on observance of Vigilance Awareness Week from 27 October – 1 November, 2014. Paper placards were also produced during Cleanliness Drive under Swachh Bharat Mission theme.

PREPARATION OF EXHIBITS

Photographs of different sizes, copy panels on flex, etc were prepared for participation in the exhibitions on 7 occasions.

PARTICIPATION IN EXHIBITIONS/’MELAS’

Eastern Railway participated in 13 exhibitions/melas during the year.

DISPLAY ADVERTISEMENTS

Forty three (43) display advertisements were designed and released during the period on Corporate Image, Social Theme, Informative & Operational matters.

Five hundred forty six (546) other classified display advertisements were also published for catering  various organizational information to the public.

OTHER ADVERTISEMENTS

A total of 1454 nos. of Tender Notices were released during the year 2014-15.

DISPOSAL OF PUBLIC GRIEVANCE & REJOINDERS

Despite best relations being maintained with media, some adverse reports or criticism do appear in the media. Sometimes they are not based on fact. Whenever a wrong or distorted report appears in the newspaper on the services or working of this railway, immediate attention of the concerned DRM / PHOD is drawn to the news item and a proper factual clarification is also sought to contradict the distorted report. Apart from these, public complaints and allegations against this railway are also carefully scrutinized as a regular measure by sending press clippings to the concerned department / division and issuing necessary rejoinders, highlighting the remedial action taken by this railway. In order to dispel doubts from the mind of the rail users and to provide them with authentic information, as many as 05 (five) rejoinders were issued during the period.

STUDIO

The studio of this office was extensively used for documentation and visual support in publicity drive to all important events taken place in this railway during the period. Apart from photographic assignments to the important events, colour prints for publicity in the print media, exhibitions etc. were also done by the studio. Besides, colour prints covering all the developmental activities of this railway during the period were also prepared for record and also for display in Fairlie Place exhibit board.

The out-turn of work undertaken by the studio during 2014-15 is as under:

EARNINGS FROM FILM SHOOTINGS

Eminent film directors approached for shooting of their films on locations of this railway during the period. An amount of Rs.14.60 lacs was earned against licence fee from film shooting during 2014-2015.
